Which hat is Indiana Jones wearing?
When you hear the word “hat,” you might immediately think about a baseball cap. Or maybe your mind goes right to the iconic Indiana Jones hat, are we right? Even though many people can picture the famous hat, not many people know what kind of hat it is.
As Google might have revealed Indiana Jones wears a wide-brimmed, high-crowned sable fedora made of felt. Although the hats might look the same to some people in each movie, Harrison Ford is wearing a different fedora in each one. Each hat has indeed a different block shape and even the color is different! For a non-expert eye, it is almost impossible to notice but with a closer look, you can detect small differences in the fedora’s indentations. So even though the first three movie hats were made of the same material by the same company, each fedora block shape was a bit different.

In the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie Indiana Jones is wearing two different fedoras, the most iconic brown one that we all think about, and a second one where the same hat blocked was used but the color is gray.
$300,000 for the Fedora hat of The Temple of Doom!
In the second movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the fedora was a slight update on the original film’s version: this particular hat had a shorter crown than all of the others. We are proud to say that there was even a bit of Italy in this hat: it was made of a Borsalino felt!
The hat recently was recently sold for far more than the estimate during a Prop Store auction in Los Angeles. Its estimated value was between $150,000 and $250,000, according to the auction house. The anonymous winning bid was $300,000. If you think it is an enormous amount of money maybe you would like to know that the brown fedora worn by Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) sold for more than $500,000 at auction in 2015!
For the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the new fedora was again made of Borsalino felt and the crown was un-tapered and the designers tried to replicate the Raiders of the Lost Ark fedora.

There is still hope for new Indiana Jones movies!
19 years later for the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it was not anymore about designing new hats but replicating the iconic ones. A well-aged Harrison Ford is indeed wearing a fedora that was made using the same block-shape and dimensions as the one used in Raiders of the Lost Ark, which gave the fedora a very similar look. The unforgettable Indiana Jones looks!
All Indian Jones fans will be happy to hear that a fifth film is scheduled for release in 2023. We cannot wait to see the new fedora hat!
